The Process: Some "Tips" to Help You in Your SS Case
You must file an application with Social Security in person or by telephone. Filing in person is probably best because you will immediately receive a paper showing that you have applied for benefits. Be sure to ask for a copy of all papers filed.
If your initial application is denied, you should file an appeal, which Social Security calls a "Request for Reconsideration," as soon as possible. Pay attention to the date at the top of the letter when calculating how much time you have to file the appeal. It is very important to timely file your Request for Reconsideration. Failure to do so may result in your appeal being denied.
If your Request for Reconsideration is denied, you must file a "Request for Hearing."
